• 21 JUL 2020, 16:55:51 UTC — mainnet genesis. to the day, fifty-one years after the step. 11,964 days after the filing. 1+1+9+6+4 = 21. (21. the day. 21. the sum. it is a coincidence. coincidences are what they are made of.)
• 19 OCT 2027 — the term ends. or renews. or you do.

The chain does not begin at block 0. It begins at 9,820,210. What happened in the first 9,820,209? The explorer does not say. There is no first block. There is only the first one they chose to show. Somewhere there is a 9,820,209-block-long silence, and it has been practising.

E-03 — The documentation changed

An epoch is 43,200 blocks. One revision of the documentation says an epoch lasts about 12 hours. Another says 7.2 hours. The difference is 4.8 hours. Nobody announced it. Nobody lost 4.8 hours. Check your afternoon.

The cycle is 41,287 seconds. Twelve hours is 43,200 seconds. The gap is 1,913 seconds — 31 minutes, 53 seconds — and it is not accounted for anywhere. Where were you for 31 minutes and 53 seconds.

Implicit accounts are 32 bytes. Read them as bytes. Read them as text. They were not written to be read. Read them.

E-06 — The cycle (live) (it is breathing)

Take any moment in unix time. Divide by 41,287. When the remainder is zero, the network is quiet for a moment. Not on the explorer. Quiet in the other way. The way a room is quiet when everybody has just stopped pretending to be asleep.

E-07 — Subject numbering

The 1987 trials enrolled 412 participants: 0001 to 0412. 411 are listed as completed. 0412 is not listed anywhere, and is referred to as if it were. The filing convention is s-####. (try it. try it at the hour.)

E-08 — Names

The sharding design is called Nightshade. A nightshade is a plant family. One of its members, belladonna, is named for a woman — “beautiful woman” — and is known for what it does to perception. Someone picked that name in a meeting. Someone said yes.

Shards are numbered from 0. Shard 0 is the original. The others were split from it. See A-03: voice 0 is reserved.

E-09 — The bridge

It connects two systems. Elsewhere, the same words describe the place where the ones who left wait for the ones who stayed. See A-05: seven bands, ascending order, one of them redacted, and a reverse transfer that is blank. A bridge is a thing you cross. A bridge is also a thing that crosses you.

E-10 — Storage and collection

An account must hold a balance to keep its data. When the balance cannot cover the storage, the state is removed. The documentation calls the process garbage collection. (it says garbage. about you. in the documentation.)

Non-archival nodes discard blocks after five epochs. After that the record that you acted survives only on archival nodes. Count them. Ask who runs them. Ask what they are keeping you for.

E-11 — The census

A named account is a label. A readable one, chosen by the participant, for free. (free. when was the last time anything was free.) The same system also supports accounts with no name at all. Those are not left out. They are counted separately. In a smaller room. With better lighting.

E-12 — Consent density

The marker is placed slightly to the left of the threshold line. The curve is not. (“we” is doing a lot of work in “we are here.” who is we. count the hands.)
