Why this name

In 1987 a condition was recorded in late-phase participants: continuous behaviour without continuous record. It was provisionally termed FUGUE. In music, a fugue is a single theme carried by several voices that are never in unison. Each enters in turn. Each believes it is the theme.

There is a third meaning. A person walks out of their life, takes a bus to a town they have never seen, and becomes someone who sells shoes. He is very happy. He is the other voice. He has never once thought of you.

The token is named for the state, not the music: fugue, for the condition. 0412, for the one who was never listed. Whichever of the two you hear, you are hearing the same thing. (you are hearing the shoe salesman.)
